The migration of Tamil workers to Ahmedabad began in the 1940s and 1950s, driven by the booming textile industry. Many Tamilians found employment in textile mills and settled in Maninagar, which later became known as ‘Mini Tamil Nadu’ due to its thriving Tamil community. However, with the gradual decline of the textile industry, many workers faced unemployment and sought alternative livelihoods. This led to the rise of small businesses, particularly food eateries, which flourished and gave Maninagar its popular nickname, ‘Idli Char Rasta.’

Over time, the Tamil community expanded across Ahmedabad while maintaining strong cultural ties. Festivals, traditions, and community-driven initiatives continue to preserve their heritage. Organizations like ‘Kakkum Karangal Ladies Wing’ support underprivileged Tamilians by providing educational aid, vocational tools, and platforms for Tamil cultural events. The Sri Balamurugan Temple remains a spiritual and social hub, bringing Tamilians together during festivals like Paguni Uthiram. This project focuses on the resilience, traditions, and evolving identity of the migrant Tamil community in Ahmedabad.
